The contents of the bundle are purposefully vague. It is something living, but something that is not totally ok or normal (signaled by the protruding "digit," which is out of proportion with what is inside.) It is meant to be a commentary about how if somebody is a bit different or out of the mainstream, society tends to treat him or her harshly.

In the realm of contemporary art, the sculpture To Be Different by Douglas Thielscher stands as a poignant and evocative testament to the complex interplay between individuality, societal norms, and the sometimes harsh treatment endured by those who dare to be different.

Thielscher brings a luminous quality and timeless elegance to the artwork by using Carrara Marble. The choice of material also infuses the piece with ethereal beauty and historical resonance. The sculpture's central motif is a human foot, depicted with forceful determination as it steps onto a bundle, whose contents remain purposefully enigmatic. Yet, a small finger protruding from a crevasse offers a poignant glimpse into the concealed figure within. This juxtaposition between seen and unseen serves as a metaphor for the hidden struggles of those who may be perceived as "different" in society. By examining the hidden struggles within the bundle, the sculpture invites viewers to contemplate the invisible challenges faced by those considered "different."

Thielscher's commentary underscores that society can often treat individuals who deviate from the mainstream with unconscious prejudice and cruelty. This marble artwork serves as both a reflection and a call to action, shedding light on the often tricky path faced by individuals who deviate from the mainstream and challenge conventions. In a world that too often values conformity, To Be Different challenges us to confront our biases and preconceptions. It reminds us that the path of individuality, while courageous and authentic, can be fraught with difficulties.

Thielscher's work embodies art's power to illuminate uncomfortable truths, foster empathy, and spark conversations about societal norms.

As we stand before To Be Different, we are invited to contemplate our role in promoting acceptance, understanding, and compassion for those who dare to be unique in a world that sometimes demands conformity.

With this artwork, Thielscher ultimately invites us to empathize with the marginalized and reflect on societal norms. It encourages us to advocate for a more inclusive and compassionate world where being different is not a source of harsh treatment but a testament to the beauty of individuality
