The Id is the part of our personality that is present from birth. It is our unconscious and contains our basic instinctual drives. The Id is regarded as "the great reservoir of libido," the instinctive drive to create — the life instincts that are crucial to pleasurable survival. Tragically, I feel that over time the Id is slowly eroded or suppressed by our parents, culture, and society, gradually forming and shaping us. Whether while creating a sculpture or not, I am constantly working hard to try to tap into my "Id" and break out of the "box" that has formed around me over the past 59 years.

In this evocative sculpture, Douglas Thielscher embarks on a profound exploration of the intricate facets of the human psyche, as illuminated by Sigmund Freud's concept of the "ID."

This exquisite work, cast in bronze, delves deep into the realms of the unconscious, revealing the primal instincts and innate drives that define our existence.

"The ID," articulated by Freud, represents an essential aspect of our personality present from birth—an unconscious realm that harbors our primal, instinctual urges. Freud aptly dubbed the "ID" as "the great reservoir of libido," a source of energy that compels us to create and forge our paths in life. Within this enigmatic reservoir reside the life instincts vital for our pleasurable survival, serving as the wellspring of our creative energy. Thielscher's artistic odyssey unfolds against a poignant tragedy—the gradual erosion and suppression of the "ID" by the influence of our families, culture, and society, shaping and molding us into conformity. Thielscher, both in his artistic practice and life journey, is unceasingly committed to tapping into his "ID" and freeing himself from the confines that have shaped him over 59 years.

Within the sculpture "ID," the artist artfully encapsulates this complex theme, leveraging the unique qualities of bronze as his chosen medium.

Bronze, known for its timeless allure and adaptability, becomes a metaphorical canvas upon which Thielscher's artistic vision takes form. The human hand emerges from the bronze, symbolizing the profound quest to hone into our "ID" and break free from the limitations that society imposes. The inherent strength and malleability of bronze mirror the enduring human spirit's resilience and capacity to adapt to change.

As "ID" stands before us, it serves as a powerful mirror, challenging us to confront the subtle transformation that occurs throughout our lives—a journey towards rediscovering our primal drives, unleashing creativity, and breaking free from the confines that bind us. This remarkable bronze sculpture transcends aesthetics to become a mirror reflecting the depths of our subconscious and the enduring human aspiration to reconnect with our instinctual essence.
