Artist Statement

This piece is centered around the idea that we sometimes try so hard at things that we essentially tie ourselves into a knot.  The clenched fists are meant to convey that intense effort.

The title refers to the idea that sometimes we will go to great lengths - try to “move heaven and earth” - in pursuit of our goals. We reach for the sublime only to be dragged down by earthly limitations.

In "Heaven And Earth," a mesmerizing Carrara marble sculpture by Douglas Thielscher, the artist delves into the profound human experience of aspiration and the relentless pursuit of our goals. This sculpture serves as a powerful visual allegory for the intricate dance between our lofty aspirations and the earthly limitations that often entangle us.

At the heart of "Heaven And Earth" lies the poignant concept that our unyielding determination and relentless effort can sometimes lead to a self-imposed entanglement—a knot of our own making. Thielscher masterfully captures this essence by depicting a clenched fists conveying the intensity and fervor with which we strive to attain our desires.

The title, "Heaven And Earth," carries a profound dual significance. It alludes to the human propensity to go to great lengths and "move heaven and earth" in the relentless pursuit of our most cherished goals. We reach for the sublime, aspiring to transcend our earthly limitations and touch the divine. However, in our zealous pursuit of the ethereal, we can inadvertently find ourselves ensnared by the very earthly constraints we sought to overcome.

In a world where the human spirit is driven by an innate desire to reach ever higher and strive for the extraordinary, "Heaven And Earth" stands as a powerful testament to the intricate interplay between aspiration and limitation. Thielscher's sculpture invites us to reflect on the profound concept of the sublime—a state of transcendence that beckons us to reach beyond our earthly boundaries. Yet, it also serves as a poignant reminder that in our quest for the extraordinary, we must navigate the terrestrial forces that seek to bind us. "Heaven And Earth" encourages us to contemplate the delicate equilibrium between aspiration and reality, offering a timeless and thought-provoking exploration of the human condition.
