SHADOW
carrara and black belgian marble, steel
16.5”h x 11”w x 9.5”d, 2016
In Jungian psychology, the shadow refers to an unconscious aspect of the personality, which the conscious ego does not identify in itself. It is often the unknown dark side of the personality. "Everyone carries a shadow," Jung wrote, "and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is." I have chosen to represent the conscious personality with the white Cararra statuario marble and the shadow with Belgian black marble. Note that the black is one single piece of stone, and that the balls are not glued on. (INSTALL NOTES: Unscrew rod with sculpture attached from base and place separately in crate, between pillows. Handle with rubber gloves included in crate.)
